What to Pack for a Holiday in the Winter Sun

This grey January-February has got us dreaming of escape. We won’t lie, we’re missing the sun. Aren’t you? Escapism is essential sometimes. It refreshes the mind, our creativity, and can reset our outlook on the world. So say bye to these grey British skies, and pack with us for a winter sun holiday. We’re thinking blue skies, carefree moments, the sea caressing our toes and sipping the odd cocktail under a palm tree. Nothing sounds more perfect right now.

What to pack for a winter sun holiday?

Picture this: It’s winter here but it’s like summer there. That means our priority is to pack for warmer weather, but still have the odd cosier piece ready for the flight home, and our most luxe loungewear prepped for the outbound journey. Whether you’re a 20kg kind of packer, who usually throws their whole wardrobe in so they still have every choice possible when on holiday, or you’re more of a happy-with-10kg and knows how to expertly roll your clothes so everything fits, packing can be made easy by breaking your trip into day by day. Even if you’ve not made plans for during the holiday, there’s always breakfast, lunch and dinner to consider. Personally, we like a stunning outfit for the evenings, and mix’n’match pieces for daytime. And if there’s no time or place to wash your clothes during the holiday, then once you’ve worn an evening outfit, you can totally wear some of it during one of the other days – versatility is the key to packing perfection. So without further adiau, what would we pack?

The Bardot Jersey Dress

Jersey dresses are great for daytime dressing that are light and airy, but add a necklace and wedges and you can transform it into a great piece for dinner by the sea. Bardot dresses in particular are wonderful for showing off your shoulders (and catching a tan), and they can double up as a thrown-on beach dress for those days relaxing on the sand. Layer over your swimwear in daytime, then pair with a bag and wedges for evening.

Throw on over your swimwear for a lightweight and breatheable coverup, and tuck into denim or linen blend shorts for an easy, by the beach outfit. Take into the evening by knotting at the waist and pairing it with a floral midi skirt.

Cut in a regular fit with flowy sleeves, this stylish dress has petal-shaped cut outs at the neckline for extra pretty detail. In a mini length, this dress has a slim tie waist belt that you can tie as desired to cinch in your waist. Daytime glam calls for a white trainer and denim jacket which is perfect is it’s a bit cooler while on your getaway. This is the perfect dress to wear in the evening too as you can dress it up with nice sandals or wedges and add some lipstick!

Destination ideas to tempt you

Malta: In October, our Content Writer Anna jetted off to Malta for a week chasing that last bit of sun. At over 20 degrees, Malta was a great choice for bearable heat that doesn’t stop you from wearing your favourite and most glamourous holiday clothes. Perfect for the winter sun weather were light cotton shirt dresses, midi skirts and versatile day-to-night dresses. Hotspots found for those who are explorers at heart are the Mdina (the medieval fortress, full of Arab and Italian charm), the capital Valetta with its up and down streets, and St Paul’s Bay for great restaurants. Anna’s top tip? Get to Golden Bay near to Mellieħa early morning for the best spot on the beach before the temperatures rise.

Tenerife: January is a great time to head off to the Canary Islands which boast lovely warm temperatures even in January. Tenerife has everything you could want from a holiday with gorgeous sun trap beaches, great ambiance, and good quality hotels. It’s also easy to book, and not a long budget flight away!

Morocco: Morocco is a great destination for January/February breaks as there are less tourists in the hotspots. You can stay in Cassablanca for under 100€ and hope for around 7 hours of sunshine – way better than the UK, right?! And there’s always Marrakech, which seems to be fast-becoming one of British tourists’ favourite places to visit. There’s so much to do in Morocco, from tourist adventures like hiking up the Atlas Mountains, to quadbiking, camel riding and visiting the market stalls. There’s so much beauty in the myriad of prints and textures that makes Morocco such a fun and inspiring cultural holiday.
