Lisbon, Portugal is the place to visit this spring. You may have seen tons of people on Instagram book trips to the vibrant Portuguese city with its iconic yellow trams and myriad of printed and textured tiled pathways and mosaic walls. Inside those city walls is a buzzing culture of delight: from fruit stalls, to the smell of authentic anchovies and freshly brewed coffee, there’s a serene air of charm that undercuts the hustle and bustle of a cosmopolitan, working city. Now a major tourist attraction, we at Threadbare are crowning Lisbon as Europe’s hottest Spring destination. Warm enough to enjoy al fresco dining and definitely t-shirt weather, we took to the streets for our first Spring/Summer 2023 shoot: Essential Escapism.
Essential Escapism: Threadbare Spring/Summer 2023
The Essential Escapism S/S23 collection seeks to make time to embrace the getaway feeling of travel, exploring new places in transitional essentials that are forever investment pieces. Spring and summer shapes come to life in the streets of Lisbon, where a myriad of colours, prints and textures inspires a new level of creativity in espace seekers. Our spring collection is inspired by effortlessness in everyday essentials and captures the feeling of escaping, wearing pieces that work for en-route moments and transitioning into summer.

To us, and we hope to you too, Essential Escapism embodies the feeling of needing a getaway. And let’s face it, after everything we have experienced in the last few years, a break is everything we need (and more). Lisbon is one of the oldest towns in Western Europe with Moor, Spanish and African influences along with the Roman and Ottoman conquests playing a part in its history, making it a historical delight. If food and drink are more your thing when it comes to a destination, then Lisbon has all of that too – click here to find some of the best and most recommended places to eat and drink in the city.
We absolutely love the tiles of Lisbon, and they inspired our designers to put together a bold and colourful Spring collection that incorporates artisan-feel fabrics and shapes that flatter both men and women, along with palettes that speak to serene glamour, and easy-to-wear transitional essentials that can be worn from work to the airport, to the city streets of another country. Across menswear and womenswear, our Essential Escapism collection combines playful uses of colour, floral and geometric prints, linen-rich pieces that are softly tailored for a laidback luxe effect, and men’s swimshorts in fun graphics to bring the pazazz to the poolside while still looking effortless.

All the colour. From lemon yellows to raspberry reds, turquoise blues and pops of tangerine, Lisbon is brimming with playful palettes to be inspired by. We love the fun uses of fruit and vegetables that are used on the tiles, and the Moorish-inspired designs that give this country rich Arab undertones.
